A patient called us, anxious and frustrated. They had a stubborn ear infection that wasn’t clearing up. Their originally prescribed ear drops were on backorder everywhere, including here. The backup options were also unavailable, so they ended up with a third-choice antibacterial drop that seemed to help just enough to not really work. A week later, the infection looked fungal, and the patient was still searching for the first prescribed medication.
When they called, I listened carefully and learned the whole story. Although we didn’t have the prescribed drops, I suggested contacting the patient’s provider about a compounded alternative. This kind of custom-made medication was actually available earlier but hadn’t been considered before. I reached out to the provider and arranged for a compounded solution tailored to the patient’s needs.
This action gave the patient another option when all the standard medications were either unavailable or ineffective. It wasn’t just about filling a prescription—it was about finding a practical solution in a tricky situation. Because of a pharmacist, something important happened.
