Connecting Through Stickers to Support Medication Safety

Care coordination
Last week, a parent came in visibly overwhelmed, struggling to manage their child’s mental health after a recent family loss. The child was having difficulty with anti-depressants and anxiety about taking the medication. I suggested a private conversation, hoping to build some trust. During our talk, we discovered a shared love of stickers, which helped ease the tension and opened the door for more honest communication.

Sensing hesitation about phone calls, I offered my cell number for texting in case they needed quick advice, especially since I would be away at a conference soon. A few days later, the parent reached out by text, reporting an adverse reaction in the child. I guided them on contacting their physician promptly and explained options for rescue medication and possible adjustments.

As a result, the parent was able to coordinate care effectively, securing the right medication changes to keep their child safe. That connection, built quietly over stickers and understanding, made timely intervention possible.

Because of a pharmacist, something important happened.
