Helping Her Walk Without Fear Again

Clinical reasoning
A woman in her 30s came in, a cancer survivor living with chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. She described severe pain under her feet that made her freeze mid-walk, afraid of falling. Even walking down a grocery aisle was a major challenge for her. She brought a printout of a product from Amazon that she hoped might ease her symptoms. After reviewing the ingredients and customer reviews, I suggested she might be better off with petroleum jelly but felt she was a good candidate for something more tailored.

We spent time discussing her symptoms and medical history. I wrote a note to her doctor outlining a few treatment options with clinical reasons for each. Her doctor quickly approved my first choice, which was not a standard over-the-counter product but one made specifically for her situation. This collaboration was encouraging—it’s not always straightforward to try unfamiliar therapies, but the doctor understood the value of targeted pharmacology.

Four weeks later, she reported walking through a grocery aisle without stopping. She had been able to walk for 15 minutes at a time without the usual overwhelming pain or fear. She said she hadn’t realized how much of her mind was preoccupied by the pain until it eased.

Because of a pharmacist, something important happened.
