Medication safety
One afternoon, a new prescription for tramadol was brought to my attention. It was meant for pain relief after a dental procedure. As I reviewed the patient’s history, I noticed a documented seizure disorder. Knowing that tramadol can significantly lower the seizure threshold and is contraindicated in such cases, I paused before filling the medication.
I contacted the prescribing provider to discuss the potential risks. Together, we explored safer pain management options that would avoid triggering seizures while still addressing the patient’s postoperative discomfort. The provider agreed to change the prescription to a less risky alternative.
By intervening early, I was able to prevent the patient from starting a medication that might have led to seizure complications. The patient received effective pain relief without the added danger.
Because of a pharmacist, something important happened.
