When a Second Look Changed Everything

A man came into the pharmacy wanting to buy Polysporin for a surgery site that hadn’t healed properly. At first glance, the area didn’t look dramatically swollen, but I noticed it was inflamed, discoloured, and warm to the touch. He said it had been painful for two weeks. The pharmacy was busy, customers were impatient, and even my assistant was nudging me to hurry. Still, something about his condition didn’t feel right.

Checking his profile, I saw he was diabetic. I told him not to use the Polysporin and urged him to go straight back to the hospital. He was hesitant, explaining he had just been seen at a hospital in another city and was prescribed prednisone. Despite this, I insisted and offered to call emergency services for our local area myself. The doctor here was responsive and advised immediate action.

Soon after, his wife returned in tears, thanking me. He had been airlifted because he was septic, and the infection had worsened quickly.

Because of a pharmacist, something important happened.
