A regular patient of mine was living with chronic pain so severe that he needed a hip replacement. Unfortunately, he couldn’t qualify for the surgery due to his diabetes not being controlled enough. His HbA1c levels were above the required target, which meant the surgery posed too many risks. I knew that to support him better, I needed a deeper understanding of diabetes management, so I pursued certification as a diabetes educator.
Once certified, I collaborated closely with the patient’s family physician. Together, we adjusted his antidiabetic medications, trying different combinations to improve his blood sugar control. It took time and careful monitoring, but gradually his HbA1c levels decreased, moving steadily toward the target.
After persistent effort from all sides, we finally achieved the target HbA1c. That change meant the patient became eligible for his hip replacement surgery. Knowing the pain that had restricted his life, it felt meaningful to have helped him get to this point.
Because of a pharmacist, something important happened.
